Variation - Hardy Weinburg Equilibrium Flashcards
What is Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium
In a randomly mating population where no migration, mutation, natural selection - proportion of dominant + recessive alleles remain constant
Give estimation of alleles frequency + genotype of a population
-sometimes many decimal number but still fine
Hardy Weinberg equation

16% of population can’t taste PTC. Non-taster are a recessive traits.
1)What is percentage of tasters?
2)Percentage frequency of dominant + recessive alleles
3)percentage of heterozygous individual
1)q^2 = 0.16 so q=square root of 0.16 -> 0.4
So 0.6 are dominant allele frequency (0.4+0.6=1)
-0.6 squared = 0.36 (homo dominant)
So 1-0.16=0.84 are non tasters
2)0.4 (40%) frequency of recessive alleles in gene pool, 0.6 for dominant
3Hetero are 2x0.4x0.6=0.48 (2pq is percentage of heterozygous)
Allele frequency is 20% recessive
What is dominant frequency
Hetero percentage
q=0.2 so p=0.8
0.2 squared =0.04 are recessive
0.8 squared = 0.64 are homo dominant
1-0.68=0.32 are hetero
