Causes of variation in organism
Sexual reproduction
-Chiasma Pro 1
-Independent assortment of homologs Met 1
-IA of sister chromatids Met 2
-Gene from patent
-Mutation
Asexual reproduction
-Mutation
Environmental
-Nutrient
-Epigenetics
2 type of variation
Heritable variation
-traits that can pass on to offspring (blood group, height)
Non-heritable variation
-traits that can’t be passed on to offspring and only learnt via environment (chlorosis, ride bike)
2 forms of heritable variation
Discontinuous variation
-controlled by single or few gene
-black or white wing colour (no value in between)
-discreet differences
Continuous variation
-controlled by many genes + environment
-height, weight
-has gradual differences in between (how tall you are)
Competition for survival
Competition between organism
-for space, food, light, mate
-infraspecific: between same species
-interspecific: between different species
Non-random breeding
-most not breed randomly, has mating ritual
-only those high in hierarchy can breed
Selection pressure
-those with traits better adapted to environment more likely to breed to have offspring that share similar traits
