Variation And Selection Flashcards
Continuous variation
Type of variation characterised by a gradual change in characteristic across a population
Discontinuous Variation
Type of variation in which all the individuals can be clearly divided into 22 or more groups and there are no intermediate states
What are the causes of variation?
Genetics and Environmental
Natural Selection
The process in which the better adapted individuals survive (at the expense of the less well adapted ones) and pass on their genes to the offspring
Antibiotic
A chemical produced by fungi that kills bacteria
Antibiotic resistance
An antibiotic-resistant bacterium cannot be killed by at least one type of antibiotic
Who came up with the theory of Natural Selection?
Charles Darwin
Evolution
A continuing process of natural selection that leads to gradual changes in organisms over time, which may lead to the formation of a new species
Extinction
A species is extinct If there are no living members of that species left
Selective breeding
The selection and subsequent breeding of organisms chosen by humans for their desirable properties
