Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis
The movement of water from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution through a selectively permeable membrane
Why do plants need water?
1) Support (turgor)
2) Transpiration
3) Transport (of minerals)
4) As a raw material in Photosynthesis
Turgor/Turgid
When a plant cell has gained enough water by osmosis causing its membrane to push against the cell wall, making it firm.
Plasmolysis/Plasmolysed
When a plant cell has lost enough water by osmosis that the membrane pulls away from the cell wall.
Transpiration
The evaporation of water from mesophyll cells, followed by diffusion through the leaf air spaces and stomata
Factors that affect the Rate of Transportation
1) Temperature
2) Wind-Speed (use fan)
3) Humidity (plastic bag)
4) Light (place in cupboard)
5) Surface Area
