Variables and planning investigations Flashcards
DV
The variable that is being measured during an experiment
IV
the variable that is being changed during an experiment
CV
variables which must be kept the same so that the results of the experiment is not affected
What are the measurements that are taken in the the experiment called
Data
Method
A method describes how an experiment is carried out. It should contain a set of written instructions with numbers or letters to show the order the steps are carried out.Diagram could be included. Each step should include 1 action and the apparatus should be described. Everything that was done should be included
Accuracy
How close a measurement is to its true value. To make sure data is accurate calculate a mean, any anomalies shouldn’t be included
Repeatable
If repeated measurements are similar
Reproducible
If an experiment is repeated by another person and the result is similar
Step 1
Asking the question
Step 2
Identifying variables
Step 3
Prediction
Step 4
Equipment
Step 5
Method
Random error
When equipment isn’t used properly or the reading is taken incorrectly
Systematic error
Not resetting a mass balance to zero or measuring from the end of a ruler instead of zero
