Atoms elements and compounds, particles and changes of state Flashcards
What are the three states of matter
Solid liquid gas
How do the particles behave in each state
Differently which gives each state different properties
What is density
A measure of the number of particles in a certain volume
What is diffusion
When particles spread from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration
Change of state from solid to liquid
Melting
Liquid to gas
Evaporating
Gas to liquid
Condensing
Liquid to solid
Freezing
What happens at both melting and boiling points
There is a period of time where the temperature remains constant as energy goes into separating the particles so that the substance can change state
What happens to the particles in a solid
They vibrate in a fixed position. They are tightly packed with a high density level
What happens to the particles in a liquid
They move over each other. There’s more energy
What happens the particles in a gas
They are spread out and move quickly
