Structure of the earth Flashcards
Crust
Rocky outer layer 8km to 40km thick
Made of huge pieces of land called tectonic plates which fit together like a huge jigsaw puzzle. The crust is mined by humans for resources
The mantle
Semi solid layer, thickest layer and is made of semi solid rock that moves very slowly like a liquid.
The tectonic plates float on top of the mantle meaning they both move at the same time
Core
Made of iron and a smaller amount of nickel. The inner core is solid and the outer core is liquid. The two metals in the core, iron and nickel are both magnetic which gives the Earth its magnetic field
What is the troposphere
The lowest layer of the earths atmosphere and also where nearly all weather conditions take place.
The most common element in the earth’s atmosphere
Nitrogen 78
2nd most common
Oxygen 21
3rd most common
Argon 1
Least common
Carbon dioxide 0.04
