Rocks and weathering Flashcards
Porous
Many small holes takes in liquid or air
Why are rocks continually changing
Due to processes like weathering and erosion
What is the rock cycle
Rocks being gradually recycled over millions of years changing between the different rock types
Igneous rock
Formed from the cooling of molten rock
Sedimentary rock
Formed by small rock pieces being transported in rivers and laid down in layers
Metamorphic rock
Formed from another existing rock, changed by high heats and extreme pressures
Weathering
When rocks are broken down into smaller ones
Biological weathering
Rocks being broken up by the roots of plants or animals burrowing into them
Chemical weathering
Rocks being broken up because substances in rainwater, seawater or rivers, or the air react with the minerals in the rocks
Physical weathering
Rocks being broken up by changes in temperature, freezing and thawing of trapped water or the action of waves and rivers
Erosion
When rocks are gradually worn down and move away from the original rock
