A
- Angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB)
- antihypertensive

Valsartan dose?
A
- Initial 80-160 mg/ daily
- Max 320mg a day

Valsartan action?
A
- Block the hormone of angiotensin II from binding to receptors sited in adrenal glands, vascular smooth muscles, and other tissues
- reduced renal reabsorption of sodium
- Helps reduce fluid retention that occurs in heart failure

Valsartan contraindications?
A
- Concurrent alreskirin therapy in diabetic pt
- Hypersensitive to med or components

Valsartan interactions?
A
- ACE inhibitors
- lithium
- NSAID’s
- Antihypertensive diuretics
- Foods high in potassium ( Bananas, potatoes)

Valsartan complications?
A
- edema
- hypotension
- Thromboycytpenia
- Hepatitis
- hyperkalemia

Valsartan pt education?
A
- take as prescribed
- take same time each day to maintain therapeutic effect
- instruct pt to shake bottle for at least 10 sec before
- Avoid hazardous activities
- Instruct females of child bearing ability to use another form of birth control
- Avoid NSAIDS
