Metoprolol action?

A
  • Inhibits stimuli of beta1 receptor sites located mainly in the heart
  • results in decreased cardiac excitability, cardiac output, myocardial oxygen demand
  • helps reduce BP by decreasing renal release of renin

Metoprolol education?

A
  • Take with or immediately after the same meal everyday
  • do not chew or crush tablets (can have them)
  • Notify if pulse falls below 8o BPM
  • Diabetic pt to check BG levels often
  • Do not stop drug abruptly

  • Heart failure
    -Hypoglycemia

  • hypersensitivity to med of other beta blockers of components
  • heart block greater than first degree ( angina/ hypertension)
  • second and third degree heart block for MI
