A
- Initial 25-100mg daily
- Max 400 mg daily

- Antihypertensive

- Beta1 adrenergic blocker

Metoprolol action?
A
- Inhibits stimuli of beta1 receptor sites located mainly in the heart
- results in decreased cardiac excitability, cardiac output, myocardial oxygen demand
- helps reduce BP by decreasing renal release of renin

Metoprolol education?
A
- Take with or immediately after the same meal everyday
- do not chew or crush tablets (can have them)
- Notify if pulse falls below 8o BPM
- Diabetic pt to check BG levels often
- Do not stop drug abruptly

Metoprolol complications?
A
- Arrhythmias
- cardiac arrest
- Cardiogenic shock
- Heart failure
-Hypoglycemia - Bronchospasm
-Photosensitivity - May cause erectile dysfunction and inhibit sperm motility

- Calcium channel blockers
- CYP2D6 inhibitors
- digoxin and other beta blockers
- MAOI
- All foods increase Bioavailability of metoprolol

Metoprolol contraindications ?
A
- hypersensitivity to med of other beta blockers of components
- heart block greater than first degree ( angina/ hypertension)
- second and third degree heart block for MI

A
- Hypertension
- Angina Pectoris
- Prevention of MI and decreased mortality in pt with recently MI
- Stable, symptomatic heart failure due to ischemic, hypertensive, or cardiomyopathic origin
