Isosorbide mononitrate action?
A
-Interacts with nitrate receptors in vascular smooth muscle cell membranes
- An increased CGMP level relaxes vascular smooth muscle by forcing calcium out of the muscle cells causing vasodilation
- Improves cardiac output by reducing preload and afterload

Isosorbide mononitrate Contraindications?
A
- Concurrent of phosphodiesterase inhibitors
- Hypersensitivity to it or other nitrates

A
- Alcohol use increases orthostatic hypotension
- vasodilators
-phosphodiesterase inhibitors

Isosorbide mononitrate education?
A
- teach pt how to recognize s/sx of angina
- do not crush or chew
- Educate about length of time if med is taken more than once a day
- notify provider if blurred vision, fainting, increased angina attacks
- avoid hazardous activities until CNS effects are known
- store drug in tightly closed container and protect from heat and light
- educate about orthostatic hypotension and changing positions slowly
