A

-Interacts with nitrate receptors in vascular smooth muscle cell membranes
- An increased CGMP level relaxes vascular smooth muscle by forcing calcium out of the muscle cells causing vasodilation
- Improves cardiac output by reducing preload and afterload

  • Concurrent of phosphodiesterase inhibitors
  • Hypersensitivity to it or other nitrates

A
  • teach pt how to recognize s/sx of angina
  • do not crush or chew
  • Educate about length of time if med is taken more than once a day
  • notify provider if blurred vision, fainting, increased angina attacks
  • avoid hazardous activities until CNS effects are known
  • store drug in tightly closed container and protect from heat and light
  • educate about orthostatic hypotension and changing positions slowly
