vaildity and reliability Flashcards
validity
refers to the extent to which the procedures used for a research study measure what it intended measure.
measured by a continuum not “vaild or not vaild”
types of validity
internal validity
external validity
internal validity
the extent to which the results are actually due to the IV rather than some other factor
“Does the data collection method actually measure the DV”
external validity
the extent of which the results can be generalised to the population
“ does the sample represent the population”
- good when there is various partipants
repeatability vs reproducibility
both indicate reliability
- repeatability: the degree to which a specific research investigation obtains similar results when it is conducted again under the same conditions
- reproducibility: how close the results to each other when an investigation is replicated under changed conditions
reliability
refers to the extent to WHCIH RESULTS OBTAINED FROM A RESEARCH STUDY ARE:
-CONSISTENT
-DEPENDABLE
- STABLE
- important for the study to repeat
what increases reliability
When the study is replicated (repeated) and the results are similar to another experiment completed with the same conditions
Using a large sample
Completing an adequate number of trials
what decreases reliability
Using human judgement to record participants’ responses
Small sample size
Completing an inadequate number of trials
Presence of confounding variables
