comparing operant and classical Flashcards
How a response is acquired
classical conditioning: not through consequences, there are no external factors affecting the response, just the neutral and unconditioned stimulus
operant conditioning: through consequences
- the consequences determine whether the behaviour will weaken and strengthen
Role of learner
classical conditioning: passive, the learner is not aware and has no control of the learning process
operant conditioning: active, the learner is aware of the learning processes and is able to control their behaviour
Timing of stimulus and response
classical conditioning: the response is acquire immediately after both the neutral stimulus and unconditioned stimulus is presented
operant conditioning: reinforcement and punishment is presented after the response/behaviour occurs ( behaviour than consequence)
Nature of response (reflexive/voluntary)
classical conditioning : reflexive, automatic response
operant conditioning: Voluntary, conscious of response
