what is vagabondage?
condition of homelessness without income and there form of income is mainly begging, petty theft.
why was their an increase of vagabondage?
poulation increase, falling wages and rising food prices, bad harvests/ starvation
Right to travel was allowed now, allowing people to travel for work.
why were people scared of these vagrants?
people saw the vagabonds as lazy or criminals, living in ‘terror of the tramp’.
How did media influence people about the vagabonds?
pamphlets warned about the dangers of the vagabonds. Government also passed new laws to deal with this ‘threat’.
How did the government deal with them?
Houses of correction (a new type of prison) were built to punish persistent beggars.
Poor law of 1601- made the judgement of were deserving poor people and who weren’t
