who was apart the gunpowder plot?

A

A group of plotters (catholics) led by robert cecil who were angry at the anti catholic laws brought in by james 1.

What did robert catesby plot to do?

A

To blow up the king and his governent, and put a catholic on the throne.
Guy fawkes filled a vault underneath the houses of parliament with36 barrels.

How was the plan ruined?

A

They had warned Lord monteagle not to attend the opening of the parliament.
Monteagle took this information and informed Robert Cecil.

what did they do when recieving the information?

A

The vaults were immediately checked and Guy Fawkes was arrested.

He was tortured until he confessed and gave names of the others.

Rest of the plotters escaped but were caught at Holbeach house.

Catesby was killed. The others returned London and were sentenced hanged drawn and quarted.

Outcomes/Punishment?

A

Executed as they comitted high treason.
Also used this oppourtunity to create a detterrent for other potential catholic traitors.
A chance for James 1 to persecute catholics.

What acts passed through as an outcome to this?

A

Thanksgiving act - ordered 5th/11 to be celebrated each year. Catholics be banned from working as a lawyer or soldier.

The popish recusants act - forces Ctholics to take an oath of allegiance and attend church of England services.

Catholics banned from voting in elections for over 200 years.
