What were punishments mainly based on?

1.prisons
Prisons were mainly used as a holding area for people awaiting for their trials.
however in 1556 the bridewell prison was introduced:used to punish vagabonds and house orphans. they had to do hard labour like brealing up rocks.
- The bloody code
The bloody code was when the number crimes that carried the death penalty rose to 50, for example poaching or catching fish to eat.
- Why was the pont of the bloody code?
To create a strong deterrent so that crime rates would be reduced.
- What could pregnant women do to be pardoned from a death penalty?
‘plead for the belly’= Pregnant women could ask to live until the birth of the baby. If so, then the punishment would be delayed until after the birth, usually women were pardoned after this.
- Transportation to North america - when was it introduced?
This form of punishment was introduced during the reign of James 1
- What was it?
Prisoners would be shipped to east coast of North america where they worked for a fixed peiod of time.
They would do tough manual work like clearing trees, doing farm work
- How long did they stay?
the punishment lasted for 14 years and alternative to execution.
If committed a lesser crime = served for 7 years.
- why didn’t many return when they finished with their punishment?
prisoners often stayed in N.america since they wouldn’t have the money to return.
- Why was it favoured by authorities?
Effective deterrent
England din’t have effective prison
England wanted to estabilish permanent
settlements in N.america : prisoners provided the manpower for this.
New idea of punishment (rehabilitation- reflection on their crimes and how to change for the better).
Help the criminals make a new start.
3.Who were also sent to n.americas other than criminals?
James 1 also sent homeless children from London.
They were called ‘duty boys’, although 25% were girls.
Many died on board ship or America.
