vaccination and antibiotics and biotics Flashcards
How do vaccinations work?
Inject a dead/inactive pathogen inside you body.
-carries antigens which causes body to produce antibodies to attack pathogen.
If the pathogen of the same type appears white blood cells with rapidly produce antibodies and recognize the pathogen and attack it.
therefore you don’t get sick.
What are the pro’s of vaccinations?
. protection from diseases
controls common diseases such as affluenza and chicken pox.
prevents epidemics.
What are the cons of vaccination?
Don’t grant full immunity (sometimes)/ don’t always work.
can cause reactions- swelling/ seizures/fever.
severe reactions are rare
What is heard immunity?
If large portion of population is vaccinated the likely the chance of the diseases getting passed on from person to person. even those who are not immune.
What are painkillers?
Painkillers relieve symptoms. eg, headache, coughing, pain.
paracetamol, aspirin, cough medicine.
doesn’t cure problems
bacteria still present.
What are antibiotics?
Kill bacteria/ stop more growing.
made specifically for bacteria
can not kill viruses, as viruses hide in our body cells and can be hard to find.
can be prescribed to specific bacteria.
different antibiotics are effective for different strains of bacteria.
bacteria can become resistant to antiobiotics.
