Photosynthesis reaction and rate of photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis used for?
uses energy to transfer carbon dioxide and water to glucose and oxygen.
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Takes place in the leaf in the chloroplast
chloroplast contains chlorophyll which absorbs light.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water ——(light) glucose + oxygen
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 +6H2O——C6H12O6 + 6O2
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic reaction
Energy is transferred from environment to chloroplasts by light.
What is an endothermic reaction?
Absorbs energy from surroundings.
What are the 5 things plants use glucose for?
cellular respiration (break down glucose to release energy)
makes cellulose to strengthen cell walls
make starch for long term storage is soluble will not draw water into cell by osmosis. Ready for use when photosynthesis is not happening. (winter)
makes amino acids by combining glucose with nitrate ions and make proteins by combining these amino acids.
Makes oil fats which can be stored as energy resource in (seeds)
How do plants get carbon dioxide for photosynthesis?
It diffuses from air into the leaves via stomata/
How do plants get water?
It diffuses from soil into root hair cell by osmosis.
What are the 3 limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide light intensity temperature, chlorophylls
Why is chlorophyll a limiting factor?
Amount of chlorophyll in a plant can get a disease such as tobacco mosaic virus or environmental stress (lack of nutrients) Chloroplast gets damaged and chlorophyll is reduced meaning it cannot absorb light and photosynthesis is reduced.
How do farmers create ideal conditions for farming?
Greenhouse to trap suns heat
artificial light so photosynthesis can continue
light/heat their greenhouses and add extra carbon dioxide.
Use oil burners to release heat/carbon dioxide at same time
keeps pests away.
fertilisers-provide minerals to plants.
What is the problem with greenhouses?
expensive
extra cost has to be justified by increase in yield.
