What does vaccination do?
stimulates an immune response in the body casing the individual to develop immunity to a pathogen
How can immunity be passed from mother to offspring?
Transplacentally or via milk/ colostrum
Why are vaccinations given after the animal has been weened?
Immunity from mothers milk can interfere with the vaccination
what is an antiserum?
contains concentrated antibodies against a pathogen
what is colostrum?
the initial mammary secretion
How many days can the transition from colostrum to milk take?
6 days
What provides maternal and passive immunity?
Immunoglobulins
How long is maternal immunity absorbed from the intestines?
24-48 hours
How do animals acquire natural immunity?
after being exposed to a pathogen then immune system develops antibodies to that pathogen that will be activated if the animal is exposed to that pathogen again
