V Shaped Valleys & Interlocking Spurs Flashcards
When are they formed
Youthful stage
Vertical erosion
The sheer force of the water (hydraulic action) can cut straight through a lot of rocks and continue straight down, creating a narrow, deep valley
Freeze thaw action
Water also gets through the cracks nearby and freeze action occurs
When breaking down, the rock will go into the river downstream as part of the rivers load
Examples
River Liffey, Moy and Lee
Interlocking spurs
When the river can’t break down the harder rock, they’ll do their best to go around it therefore creating these zips of shapes.
As the river descends from the highland, it begins to meander between spurs which interlock down the valley.
Examples of interlocking spur
River Barrow and Slaney
Weathering
Breaking down rocks and soils by rain, wind and sun. This causes the slopes to become unstable.
Mass Movement
When a large amount of material (e.g. soil and rocks) move at once.
