What is an oxbow lake?
A
It is a horseshoe-shaped lake that is formed when a meander is cut off from the river.

How is an oxbow lake formed?
A
When the neck of the meander becomes very tight, the river can erode its way through the neck to take the straightest course. this is usually during a flood when the river has a higher discharge and more energy.

When is the loop cut off?
A
The loop is cut off from the main river when sediment is deposited at the entrances to the loop.
