UXO - Fuzes Flashcards
What are the key ID features of an impact fuze and what are the safeties?
Made of lightweight metal, may have a visible plunger, may have an air-powered arming vane, nose fuse only. Safeties: HE Frag Move
What are the key ID features of an impact inertia fuze and what are the safeties?
cylindrical shape, nose fuse only, will have means to connect arming vane adapter. Safeties: HE Frag Move
What are the key ID features of a clock work fuze and what are the safeties?
Steel construction, cylindrical in shape, 6” long; four rivets around the body, has a C-shaped notch cut on the end, tail fuze only. Safeties: HE Frag Move CS CW
What are the key ID features of a Mechanical Time (MT) fuze and what are the safeties?
Can be used with all bombs and dispensers, set prior to or during flight, may have arming vanes, may have a glass window to ID time settings. Safeties: HE Frag Move CS
What are the key ID features of an Electronic Time (ET) fuze and what are the safeties?
Used with newer bombs (GPNS, GPLD), Internal fuze on bombs, may have a pop-out pin, difficult to use. Safeties: HE Frag Move CS EMR Static 24HrWT
What are the key ID features of a Proximity (VT) fuze and what are the safeties?
Body is a combination of metal and plastic, has an internal battery. Safeties: HE Frag Move EMR Static VT 24 Hr WT
What is the Electronic fuze and what are the safeties?
Found only on the Destructor Air Laid Mine. Safeties: HE Frag Move EMR Static Mag Seismic WT
What are the types of fuzing for projected munitions?
Seven types: PD, BD, PIBD, VT, MT, ET, PTTF
What are the key ID features for Point Detonating Fuze in projected munitions??
simple looking, might have a selector switch or screw slot, might have a plunger on the nose, metal or plastic body, nose fuse only.
What are the safeties for Point Detonating Fuze in projected munitions??
HE Frag Move
What are the key ID features for Base Detonating Fuze in projected munitions?
Single piece construction, not used with mortars, generally larger than a quarter
What are the safeties for Base Detonating Fuze in projected munitions?
HE Frag Move
What are the key ID features for a Point Initiated Base Detonating Fuze in projected munitions?
May be either PE/Lucky or Spitback, Crimped on nose cap is a key ID feature for PE/Lucky, Internal fuse is PE, External is Spitback; used mainly in HEAT munitions, Not used with mortars.
What are the safeties for a Point Initiated Base Detonating Fuze in projected munitions??
PE/Lucky Fuze: HE Frag Move PE/Lucky EMR Static; Spitback Fuze: HE Frag Move
What are the key ID features for a Powder Train Time Fuze in projected munitions?
Body is multi piece construction, will have vent holes and time increments on body, may have two brass rings toward the base.
What are the safeties for a Powder Train Time Fuze in projected munitions?
HE Frag Move 1Hr WT
What are the key ID features for a Mechanical Time Fuze in projected munitions?
Multi piece construction, time ring on fuze base, may have a 2nd time ring above base time ring, have a screwdriver slot on nose tip w/ a viewing window w/ time rings inside, Nose fuze only.
What are the safeties for a Mechanical Time Fuze in projected munitions?
HE Frag Move CS
What are the key ID features for an Electrical Time Fuze in projected munitions?
Metal body, multi-piece construction, newer models may look similar to VT fuze; May have LED window on side; May have a bulls eye ring on nose for means to set externally.
What are the safeties for a Electrical Time Fuze in projected munitions?
HE Frag Move CS EMR Static 1HrWT
What are the key ID features for a Proximity (VT) fuze in projected munitions?
Metal to plastic junction, multi-piece construction, may have time settings on the base, 1HrWT is for capacitors to bleed down to no-fire level.
What are the safeties for a Proximity (VT) fuze in projected munitions?
HE Frag Move VT EMR Static 1HR WT
