UV Light Lecture Flashcards

1
Q

UVC Spectrum

A

200-290 Most potent but does not penetrate the atmosphere. When made it will kill epidermal cells

Q

What causes the symptoms of sunburn ?

A

Due to UVB

  • Erythemia from vasodilation
  • Heat from Inc. Blood flow

Q

What casuses the immediate tanning response

A

16
Q

What are some effects of chronic sun exposure ?

A

Telangiectasia, Pigment abnormalities, Solar elastoses, Solar letigines Cyst and comedone formation

17
Q

What are the malignant changes in DNA from the sun ?

A

Cyclobutane dimers and 6,4 photoproducts

18
Q

How does the body protect from these mutations ?

A
Stratum corneum- reflection
Melanin- absorption
Tumor Supressor genes
DNA repair pathways
Apoptosis
19
Q

What causes Xeroderma Pigmentosum

A

A defect in nucleotide excision repair

20
Q

What are the immune effects of sun exposure ?

A

Lymphocytes and Langerhans cells are damaged

21
Q

Tanning beds —->

A

Emit UVA… This is the cancer spectrum. Does not protect against UVB which is what gives you a sunburn.

22
Q

How intense are tanning beds ?

A

They emit > 5x the amount of UVA than a unit of time in the sunlight.
