nitrofurantoin, amoxicllin or cephalexin
avoid nitrofurantoin near term
1st line treatment of lower UTI in children ?
< 3 months - refer to paediatrician
timethoprim, nitrofurantoin, cephalosporin or amoxicilin or 3 days
1st line treatment of upper UTI in children ?
either admit to hospital or oral co-amoxiclav or cephalosporin for 7-10 days
indications for sending a urine culture in adults with a UTI ?
age > 65 yrs
visible or non-visible haematuria
symptomatic in pregnancy
treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy ?
nitrofurantoin, cephalexin or amoxicillin for 7 days
indications for checking urine sample in children ?
unexplained fever > 38
signs/symptoms suggestive of UTI
alternative site of infection but remain unwell
