Q

haematogenus vs non-haematogenous osteomyelitis ?

A

haematogenous

  • results from bacteraemia
  • most common form in children
  • usually mono microbial
  • risk factors: sickle cell, immunosuppression, IV drug abuse, endocarditis

non-haematogenous

  • results from contagious spread of infection or direct trauma / injury to bone
  • commonest form in adults
  • polymicrobial
  • risk factors: diabetes, diabetic ulcers, pressure sores, PAD
