vesicular rash around the eye which may or may not involve the eye itself
hutchinson’s sign:
- rash on the tip or side of the nose
- indicates nasocillary involvement
- strong risk factor for ocular involvement
treatment for herpes zoster ophthalmicus ?
oral antiretroviral therapy for 7-10 days
- IV if severe or immunocompromised
- ideally start within 72 hours
topical steroids for secondary inflammation of the eye
ocular involvement = urgent ophthalmology review
features of herpes simplex keratitis ?
most commonly presents with dendritic corneal ulcer
red, painful eye photophobia epiphora (excessive tearing) visual acuity may be decreased fluorescent staining may show epithelial ulcer
