What are the types of UTIs?
Upper UTIs (pyelonephritis - kidney infection)
Lower UTIs
• cystitis
• urethritis
• prostatitis
Symptoms of UTI?
• fever
• dysuria
• increased frequency of urination
• blood in urine
• flank pain
Test for UTI
Dip Stick
to see if any leukocytes, nitrates or blood is present in urine
Treatment for UTIs?
Antibiotics
• 3 day course for women
• 7 day course for men
1st line - nitrofurantoin 100mg MD
2nd line - thrimethoprin 200mg
Uncomplicated UTI?
• healthy adult
• not pregnant
• no fever
• no flank pain
Extended Spectrum Beta Lactomas ?
An enzyme produced by the following bacteria?
• E.Coli
• Klebsiella
Bacteria which produce these enzymes are resistant to which agents?
penicilli & trimethropim
If UTI is resistant to Trimethoprim, nitrofurantoin and amoxicillin, then which medicine should be given?
Pivmecillinam
Treatment for complicated (Pregnancy) UTI?
1st line: Nitrofurantoin- 7 days
2nd line trimethoprim- 7 days
How often doe UTIs need to occur to be considered recurrent?
3+ times per year
Treatment for recurrent UTI?
Prophylaxis antibiotics
Cranberry products- can help prevent UTI
Warfarin - increases UTI severity
Side effects of Nitrofurantoin?
Nephrophathy issues - burning & tingling
Side effects of Trimethoprim?
Hyperkalemia
Causes of active Pyelonephritis?
Bacterial infection (eg. E.coli)
