Leiomyomas
uterine fibroids - very common + frequently multiple, benign (NOT precursor for leiomyosarcoma)
estrogen/progesterone dependent
S/S: pain, dysuria, abnormal bleeding, fertility issues
Leiomyosarcoma
RARE malignant smooth muscle tumor
myometrium job
smooth muscle layer in uterus that protects and expels fetus
endometriosis
deposits of endometrial tissue outside uterine cavity (tubes, ovaries, abdominal cavity)
S/S: abdominal pain, dysmenorrhea, infertility
Endometrial cyst (chocolate cyst)
Due to endometriosis - ovarian cyst
Adenomyosis
Endometriosis of the myometrium
Endometrial hyperplasia
estrogen driven excessive proliferation
Causes: unopposed estrogen (obesity, HRT, nullparity, early menarche, late menopause)
Can lead to development of endometrial polyps
S/S: abnormal bleeding
Can lead to endometrioid cancer
Endometrial cancer
Dx: endometrial biopsy
