How is a USG read?
Gloves
Place 2-3 drops of distilled water on prism, gently replace cover
Hold refractometer up to light source- calibrate to 1.000 USG w scale
Lift cover, dry prism
Gently invert urine sample
Pipette 1-2 drops onto prism, close cover
Read/ record USG
Clean
Dispose of PPE/ contaminated materials into clinical waste
What is the average USG for a dog?
1.035-1.060
What is the average USG for a cat?
1.015-1.045
What does an increased USG mean?
dehydration, renal faliure, shock, diabetes mellitus
What does a decreased USG mean?
polydipsia, pyometra, diabetes insipidus
What conditions would be indicated through an abnormal reading?
diabetes, kidney disease, adrenal gland disease
What does USG actually mean?
relative density, volume of fluid compared to equal volume of distilled water
Why is tap water not suitable?
contains particulate matter, misleading results
