Urine Dipstick Flashcards
Steps-
wash hands put on PPE,
confirm patient details
inspect urine colour/ clarity
remove lid from urine sample
remove urinalysis stick- avoid touching reagent squares
close lid
insert stick directly into urine, fully emerged
place stick on towel, wait 30secs
align stick with tube, examine each result with appropriate time interval
dispose in clinical waste- HWR
wipe surfaces
label in sample bag (if needed)

What does the different colours of urine indicate?
Light- normal
Dark- dehydration
Red/Pink- blood
Brown- jaundice
What does the clarity of urine indicate?
Clear- normal
Cloudy- infection
Frothy- severe protieuria
What are the limitations of a dipstick?
personal opinion of colours, bacterial risk- build-up of crystals over time
