hazardous substance, can be zoonotic- PPE should be worn- should maintain Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005
What is an example of a non-sterile and sterile urine sample?
non-sterile: litter tray/ natural urination/ manual expression
sterile: catherterisation/ cystocentesis
What type of container should urine be stored in?
sterile ceramic, steel/ plastic container- transferred into commercial waste
‘uripet’
What temperature should urine be stored in the fridge?
4-8’C- no more than 6 hours
room temperature when examining
What does a boric top red sample pot mean?
microbiological testing, bacterial numbers remain at same levels as collected
What is important to consider when storing urine?
bacteria can cause false results
refrigerated if not used immediately
fill to recommended level
Define Colour
intensity collarates with concentration
Define Turbidity
cloudy apperance, indicates abnormal higher normal concentration of: Cells, Crystals, Bacteria or Casts
Define Smell
male only slight odour- freshly voided samples indicate bacterial infection (urease)
