Use of materials/techniques Flashcards
MATERIALS 1
A machine cuts the wood into thin layers then glued and pressed together at right angles to create plywood. Plywood is a flexible cheap material that can be produced in sheets and moulded. This is clearly shown in the wooden shells of the main cushioned areas which are curved to hold the cushions
MATERIALS 2
Sheet plywood is cut to size by a machine. It is then heated and pressed into a mould to form a 3D replica of the mould. Pieces can be quickly produced by mass production. This is shown in each part of the chair being produced exactly as the last was. e.g. The chair seat, the 2 part back
MATERIALS 3
Thin layers of real grained wood called rosewood, are glued to form the outer ‘skin’ of the plywood. This is to create the effect of thick solid wood. This solidity is shown in the curved edges of the the seat
MATERIALS 4
The plywood veneer and soft leather adds a feel of luxury and warmth to the chair. It gives the impression of a quality made and well constructed product that has a sense of familiarity and warmth
