Use of biological resources Flashcards
Factors affecting crop yield
carbon dioxide limits photosynthesis.
temperature not allow enzymes to work at optimum temp.
Fertilliser
contains nutrients that allow plants to grow.
Nitrates, phosphates and potassium
Why is nitrates needed in fertiliser?
Nitrates - required to make amino acids for proteins to allow plant to grow.
Why is phosphates needed in fertilliser?
required for respiration and root growth
Why is potassium needed in fertiliser?
needed for growth of flowers and fruits, allow enzymes reactions to take place.
Pest control
using pesticides or biology control to prevent insects eating the plants
advantages of pest control
- quick and efficient
- can kill entire populations
disadvantages of pest control
- organisms can develop resistance
- non specific so kills others organisms
- can make it toxic to others in the food chain
- have to constantly do
Yeast
uses anaerobic respiration in order to bread to rise
Calculation for yeast
Glucose (C6H12O6) = Ethanol + Carbon dioxide (CO2)
Ligase enzymes
enzymes that are used to join pieces of DNA
Transgenic
transfer of genetic material from one species to a different species
advantages of cloning
- produce identical offspring
- large number of clones can be produced
- produce organs can be used as organ transplant and will not be rejected
disadvantages in cloning
- decreases variation in population
- more susceptible to diseases as no variation
