Coordination and response Flashcards
Homeostasis
maintain constant internal enviroment
Phototropism
response to light
Gravitropism or geotropism
response to gravity
Positive phototropism
they grow towards the light source
Negative gravitropism
grow away from gravity
Nervous system
made up of nerve cells that carry impulses around body
Endocrine system
made up of glands that produce hormones that stimulate changes in the body
CNS
consists of the brain and spinal cord
Synapses
gap between 2 neurons. impulses travel across synapse as neurotransmitters.
The reflex arc
- Stimulus is detected by receptors
- Impulse sent to sensory neuron
- In CNS impulses pass to relay neuron
- sent among a motor neuron
- reaches effectors and give appropriate response
The eye
- cornea: refracts light to eye
-iris: controls how much light enters eye - lens: focus light
- retina: contains light receptors
- optic nerve: carries impulses between eye and brain
The endocrine system
hormones are chemical messages
once in bloodstream transported around body to receptors on target organ
adrenaline
Increase heart rate and breathing rate
Insulin
Lowers blood glucose levels
Testosterone
Main sex hormone in men
