Movement in and out of cell Flashcards
Diffusion
the spread out of the particles resulting in a net movement of an area of higher concentration to lower concentration
What is a small molecules?
oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water
What is a large molecule?
starch and proteins
Single- celled organism
can use diffusion to transport molecules into their body from the air.
Multi- celled organism
the surface area to volume ratio is small so they rely on diffusion alone.
Factors that may effect diffusion
Concentration gradient - greater the difference in concentration, the faster the rate of diffusion.
Temperature - greater the temp the greater the particles
Surface area - greater surface area faster the rate of diffusion
Distance - further the particles have to travel longer
Osmosis
the movement of water from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrate one through a partially permeable membrane.
Osmosis in animals
if the external solution is more dilute, it will move into animal cells causing them to burst.
If more concentrated it will become shrivelled
Active transport
is the movement of particles from an area of low concertation to high concentration. (against concentration gradient)
active transportation in root hair cells
take up water and mineral ions from soil.
mineral ions usually in higher concentrations in cells, meaning diffusion cannot take place..
requires energy from respiration to work.
active transport in the gut
substances such as glucose and amino acids from your food have to move from your gut to blood stream.
Required to move sugar to the blood against its concentration
