What was the US Freedom ride?
a series of political protests against segregation by black and white people who rode buses together through the American South in 1961. Stop at Alabama, one of the worst state with racism.
When did it take place?
7 African Americans and 6 whites left Washington on May 4th, 1961 in 2 buses bound for New Orleans.
What happened to the first bus?
mob attack (window crash, punk tire, smoke bomb, fire) Bus driver escape when realise bus cant move, outside Anniston
What happened to the second bus?
people on board were beaten when getting off bus for service break by a mob of people
What was suspicious about the law enforcements on both attacks?
They were late on both occasions and did nothing - let them beat riders and didn’t press charges
How did the US freedom ride inspire civil right campaigners in Australia?
The US freedom ride inspired Charles Perkins to organise a freedom ride in 1965 in the outback of New South Wales.
