What is rhinitis?
acute or chronic inflammation of nasal mucosa
What are the classes of rhinitis?
season rhinitis & perennial rhinitis
What types of perennial rhinitis are there?
allergic, non-allergic, non-allergic with eosinophilia, nasal polyps
What are the symptoms of rhinitis..
rhinorrhoea, sneezing, perennial, episodic
what are the causes of rhinitis..
allergic (dust mites, animals), non-allergic, mixed (occupational)
what is the pathology of rhinitis..
inc mucosal flow and inc vessel permeability = inc volume of nasal mucosa
What is the management for rhinitis…
glucocorticoids (anti-inflammatories), sodium cromoglicate antihistamine), cysLT1 receptor antagonist (mediator receptor blockade)
What does rhinitis occur in?
Acute coryza, sinusitis, metapneumovirus
What is acute coryza?
viral infection of nasal passages
What causes acute coryza?
coronavirus, rhinovirus, adenovirus
How is acute coryza transmitted?
through droplets/ direct contact
What are the symptoms of coryza?
tiredness, malaise, sore nose & pharynx, sneezing, watery mucus
What causes sinusitis?
preceded by common cold
what are symptoms of sinusitis?
headache, toothache, behind eye
How is metapneumovirus tested?
PCR
