Urology Flashcards
What is the urinary bladder?
Hollow pouch with strong muscular distensible walls
Temporary reservoir for urine
Connects to the ureters and urethra
What is the trigone of the urinary bladder?
Formed by the two ureteric orifices and internal urethral orifice
Includes ureteric orifices, internal urethral orifice, interureteric fold, uvula of bladder
What are the ureteric orifices?
Openings for the ureters into the bladder
What is the internal urethral orifice?
Opening for the urethra in the neck of the bladder
What is the interureteric fold?
Superior limit of the trigone of the bladder
Joins the two ureteric openings
What is the uvula of the urinary bladder?
Swelling in the posterior wall of the bladder at the internal urethral orifice
What is the apex of the bladder?
Anterior part
What is the body of the bladder?
Between apex and fundus
What is the fundus of the bladder?
Posterior part furthest away from the internal uterthral orifice
What is the neck of the bladder?
Tapers off into urethra
Contains involuntary internal sphincter (in the walls of the neck)
What is the detrusor muscle?
Primary component of the wall of the urinary bladder
What is the vesical fascia?
Loose CT surrounding the detrusor M
Describe the male urethra
Conveyance of urine from the urinary bladder to the external urethral orifice at the glans penis
Includes the preprostatic urethra, prostatic urethra, membranous urethra, spongy urethra
What is the preprostatic urethra?
In the neck of the bladder
What is the prostatic urethra?
In the prostate gland
Communicates with the prostatic utricle and ejaculatory duct
Includes the urethral crest, prostatic sinus, seminal colliculus
What is the urethral crest?
Median ridge that swells in the center of the prostate gland as the seminal colliculus
Surrounded on either side by the prostatic sinus
What is the prostatic sinus?
Space on either side of the urethral crest and seminal colliculus
Accepts secretions from the prostatic ductules
Contains openings for the prostatic ductules
The openings for the prostatic ductules are a drainage point for what?
Prostatic fluid into the prostatic sinus
What is the seminal colliculus?
Rounded mound of urethral crest
Possesses three slit like openings
Contains prostatic utricle and openings for the ejaculatory duct
What is the prostatic utricle?
Small blind ended pouch in the seminal colliculus
Embryological remnant of the uterovaginal canal
What is the membranous urethra?
Short, through external urethral sphincter
What is the spongy urethra?
Inside the corpus spongiosum
Includes the intrabulbar fossa, navicular fossa and urethral glands
What is the intrabulbar fossa?
Internal expansion of the spongy urethra in the bulb of the penis
Receives secretions from the bulbourethral glands
Containing openings for the ducts of the bulbourethral glands
What is the navicular fossa?
Internal expansion of the spongy urethra in the glans penis
What are the male urethral glands?
Mucus secreting glands that empty directly into the spongy urethra
Describe the female urethra
Conveyance of urine from the urinary bladder to the external urethral orifice in the vestibule of the vagina
Includes the paraurethral glands and urethral glands
What are the paraurethral glands?
Homologous to the prostate gland
Secretions are conveyed via a common duct to an area near the external urethral orifice
What are the female urethral glands?
Mucous secreting glands that empathy directly into the urethra
