What are the common symptoms associated with a UTI?
Urinary frequency
Urgency
Dysuria
Lower abdominal pain
Flank pain
OR can be asymptomatic
Although UTI’s are 50x more common in females the ratio of male:female infections decreases after age 50 due to what pathology?
Ratio decreases because of increasing frequency of prostate enlargement and instrumentation in males (prostatitis is a common cause of UTI’s in males)
What are risk factors associated with UTI’s in females?
- Sexual intercourse or new sex partner (within past year)
- Diaphragm or spermicide use
- History of recurrent UTI’s
- First UTI at early age
- Menopause
What bacterial organism is the most common cause of UTI’s?
E. coli
In hospitalized patient, the risk of UTI’s caused by what types of bacteria is increased?
More gram negative infections; Klebsiella, Proteus, Enterbacter, Pseudomonas, Serratia
