urinary system Flashcards
1
Q
urinary system
A
- Maintains volume and composition of body fluids within normal limits (osmoregulation).
- It removes waste products of cellular metabolism from the body (excretory system).
- Close association with the reproductive system (urogenital system and renal system).
2
Q
functions
A
Homeostasis (osmoregulation - water balance).
- Electrolyte balance.
- Removal of nitrogenous wastes and toxins.
- Blood pH balance: excrete H+ ions, reabsorb HCO3
- , maintains blood pH at around 7.4.
- Blood pressure regulation (renin).
- Red blood cell production (erythropoietin).
3
Q
OSMOREGULATION
A
The kidney is the principle organ that regulates volume and composition of the internal fluid environment.
- Water and solute concentrations must be balanced. All animals balance the gain and loss of water and dissolved
4
Q
the kidney
A
Plays a major role in conserving water. It regulates the somatic pressure of blood.
- When fluid intake is high, the kidneys excrete dilute urine, saving salts and excreting water.
- When fluid intake is low, the kidneys conserve water by forming concentrated urine.
5
Q
glomerular filtration
A
- Glomerular Filtration: Creates a plasma like filtrate of the blood.
- Tubular Reabsorption: Removes useful solutes from the filtrate, and returns them to the blood
- Tubular Secretion: Removes additional wastes from the blood, and adds them to the filtrate.
- water conservation: Removes water from the urine an returns it to the blood; concentrates wastes.
