the sensory system Flashcards
what are sensations
include pain, temperature, touch, pressure, vibration, proprioception (position and movement of the body) and taste. There are a variety of receptors that interpret the sensory information.
how do nerve fibre size effect speed
Nerve fibres vary in sizes (some due to myelination). The difference in diameter contributes to the speed of
information flow. The greater the diameter of the fibre, the faster the action potential will travel down it.
- The speed determines the timing that the information reaches the decision making systems.
DORSAL ROOT GANGLIA NEURON
- cluster of sensory neurons located in the dorsal root of the spinal nerve
- bring information from the peripheral to the spinal cord
spinothalamic process
At the dorsal root ganglion the left to right cross over occurs at the level of input thereafter it travels up
the spinal cord neuron and to the thalamus.
Dorsal columns process
At the dorsal root ganglion the left to right cross over occurs in the brain stem neuron (medulla) and then carries on to the thalamus
