Urinary System Flashcards
Components of the urinary system
Kidneys, ureters, urethra and urinary bladder.
Functions of the urinary system
Eliminate wates, regualtes blood volume, pressure, pH and composition.
Wastes eliminated by the urinary system
Ammonia, urea, creatinine, uric acid, drugs, toxins
Nephron
Functional unit of the kidney. Consists of the glomerulus, Bowman’s capsule and renal tubule.
Hilum
Medial, concave region of the kidney. Functions as the entry point to the kidney.
Renal pelvis
Joins the kidney to the ureter.
Fluid flow through the nephron
Bowman’s capsule, renal tubule, collecting duct, renal papilla, minor and major calyx, renal pelvis, ureter.
Processes involved in blood filtration
Filtration, reabsorption and tubular secretion.
Filtration
Blood plasma enters the renal corpuscule and is filtered.
Reabsorption
Water, nutrients and ions are reabsorbed from the renal tubule into the bloodstream.
Tubular secretion
Unwanted elements are discharged from the tubule as filtrate.
Volume of the urinary bladder
700-800mL, but feels full around 300mL
Urine
Consists of 95% water and is slightly acidic.
Number of nephrons in the kidney
Around 1 million
Components of each nephron
Glomerulus, Bowman capsule and a renal tubule.
