Urinary System Flashcards
Functions of the Urinary System
Waste Elimination, Osmoregulation of blood and water, Hormone secretion
Renal Artery
Blood flows from heart into kidney through this artery
Renal Vein
Blood drains from the kidney through this vein
Nephron
Functional and structural unit of a kidney
Renal Corpuscle
One of two parts of a nephron. Consists of glomerulus and glomerular capsule (bowman’s capsule)
Glomerulus
Capillary bed that functions as a filtration system.
Bowman’s Capsule
Surrounds the glomerulus
Renal tubule
a duct that connects to the glomerulus and terminates at the tip of the medullary pryamid
Glomerular filtration
Blood enters kidney through renal artery, artery branches into capillaries which flow into the glomerulus, blood pressure forces water and solutes to diffuse from blood across capillary walls and through the bowman’s capsule into the tubule
Proximal tubule
Major site of reabsorption of water and solutes
Loop of Henle
Another site of reabsorption that comes after the proximal tubule
Distal convoluted tubule
Comes after the loop of Henle. Reabsorption and secretion occurs here
Collecting duct
Final segment, collects urine
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
Secreted from the posterior pituitary gland
Regulates urine concentration and volume by controlling how much water is reabsorbed in the tubules of the nephrons
