what is stress incontinence
leaking of urine when intra-abdominal pressure is raised, exerting pressure on the bladder
what can trigger stress incontinence
coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercising can increase abdominal pressure
risks for stress incontinence
childbirth and hysterectomy
what is urge incontinence
sudden and involuntary loss of urine associated with urgency
risk factors for urge incontinence
recurrent UTI, high BMI, age, smoking, caffeine
what is mixed incontinence
mix of stress and urge incontinence
what is functional incontinence
urge to pass urine but cant find the necessary facilities; so cant hold urine
reasons for functional incontinence
sedating medications, alcohol and dementia
what is overflow incontinence
small amounts of urine leak without warning. bladder pressure is greater than pressure of outlet structures, can be due to underactivity of detrusor muscle such as from neurological damage
what is first line management
behavioural approaches such as pelvic floor exercises, weight loss, smoking cessation, alcohol cessation and reducing caffeine as well as limiting fluid intake
what pharmacological approach can be taken for urinary incontinence
pseudoephedrine
