what is epididymitis
acute inflammation of the epididymis causing scrotal pain and swelling (only in men/ those with male repro system)
aetiology/ causes of epididymitis
Caused by a bacterial infection, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as gonorrhea or chlamydia
risk factors
unprotected sex, bladder outflow obstruction
how does epididymitis present
fever, unilateral scrotal pain and swelling (gradual onset), tenderness, inflammation (hot, red, swollen), walking will be painful
investigations for epididymitis
urine dipstick and urine culture
bloods; high WCC in FBC, high CRP, U&Es
imaging will show increased blood flow to the epididymis
management can be split into what 2 categories
medical and surgical
medical management of epididymitis
antibiotics
surgical management of epididymitis
testicular removal
