Urinary Catheterisation Flashcards
urinary catheterisation?
a narrow tube passed through urethra into bladder
reasons for a urinary catheter?
sample taking empyting/blockages medicating - flush into bladder management - of disorders maintenance - lavarging monitoring - collection bags
cystocentesis?
removal of urine from bladder using a needle
contents evacuated into universal container
used to drain bladder in obstructive emergency
prevents risk of contamination by urethra or genitalia
risk of blood contamination
urinary catheter?
dog catheter Foley catheter - latex or silicon tiemans catheter stallion catheter mare catheter Jackson cat catheter slippery sam
male dog catheter?
long catheters with a rounded tip
two drainage holes/eyes
fitted with a luer mount
attached to a syringe or three-way tap
bitch catheter?
Tieman’s catheter
- not originally designed for bitches
- similar to male to dog catheters
- but with curved plastic on tip making insert easier
foley catheter
- soft latex or silicone
- with balloon just behind eyes
- balloon prevents coming out of bladder
- soft, flexible, little trauma and no luer mount
- but need stylet for insertion
cat catheters?
jackson cat catheter
- initially for cats with obstruction so rigid
- needs a wire stylet for insertion
- has a leur mount for securing in place
slippery sam catheters
- for tomcats
- has an end hole rather than side holes
- requires a stylet for insertion
- has a leur mount for securing in place
stallion catheters?
have a rounded tip and are coated
- ensures atraumatic insertion
behind rounded top are eyes
mare catheters?
wider diameter than stallion catheters
shorter length
but same rounded end with two drainage eyelets
equipment needed for urinary catheterisation?
towels/inco pads light source sedation and topical local anaesthetic clippers cleaning solution - hibidine iodine gloves - non-sterile for prep - sterile for insert vaginal speculum lube/KY jelly catheter and sytlet if required 3 way tap collection bag
how to insert urinary catheter?
retrain patient
- sedate
- EQ in stocks
check catheter
- packaging closed
- sterile
wash hands and put on gloves
prep/scrub the area
- swab and saline
- males = occlude penis (may need sedation)
place local anaesthetic then place sterile gloves on
introduce catheter
- don’t force
- may need new catheter, adjust position or more lube
flush bladder with saline if necessary
- make sure body temperature
stitch or inflate balloon if an indwelling catheter
put on buster/Elizabethan collar
maintenance of indwelling catheters?
check for kinks or damage store flat and out of sunlight keep area clean - use nico pads changed frequently monitor patency have collection system - have collection bag lower than patient - empty regularly - check colour and consistency for health indications
how much urine does a dog, car ad horse produce?
1-2 ml/kg/hr
if the urine output is less than 1 ml/kg/hr the VS must be notified immediately
how long can an indwelling urinary catheter be left in situ for?
4-5 days
- increases chances of a UTI
urinary catheter comoplications?
blockage within catheter - build-up of sediment or kink - checked regularly infection - common - open system to drain bag/flush/ sample opens for bacteria - sterile process to reduce risk cystitis - reactive from repeat catheterising urethral and bladder trauma - not designed for catheter placement difficulty placing catheter - narrowing - crystals, growths, tumours, - don't force as will cause damage mutilation - animal interference - get caught - kink or twist - damage it - break and stuck?
