Urinalysis definition?
Simple test that provides important clinical information, has a quick turn around, and is cost effective
Why is urinalysis ordered?
A general evaluation of health
- Diagnoses urinary tract diseases (ex. UTI)
- Diagnoses and monitors chronic diseases and other metabolic/endocrine disorders (ex. diabetes)
What are the three types of urinalysis test methods?
Physical, chemical, microscopic
What is a physical examination?
Looks at:
- Colour
- Volume
- Odour
- Specific gravity (amount of substances dissolved)
What is a microscopic examination
Examine urine sediment to view elements not visible to with the naked eye
- WBC/RBC
- Crystals
- Yeast
- Bacteria
- Parasite
What is a chemical examination?
Examination of chemical properties of urine
