What is PPE?
Personal protective equipment, meant to minimize risk of exposure
- Always perform hand hygiene before and after donning/doffing PPE
How do you know what PPE to wear?
Knowing the type of exposure anticipated and the disease (known/unknown)
- Goal is task specific
What are the task specific PPE?
Contact, droplet, airborne and contact, airborne, droplet and contact
PPE for contact precautions?
Gown and gloves
PPE for droplet precautions?
Masks with face shield
PPE for airborne precautions?
N95 respirator and eye protection
PPE for airborne and contact precautions?
N95 respirator, eye protections, gown and gloves
PPE for droplet and contact precautions?
Gown, gloves, mask and eye shield
Order of donning PPE?
Gown, mask/respirator, goggles/face shield, gloves
What is the N95 fit check?
It is done to make sure the N95 seals around a HCP’s face
What are the two tests for an N95 fit check?
Positive pressure seal check
- Gently exhale to see if face piece bulges slightly
Negative pressure seal check
- Take a quick, deep breath to see if facepiece collapses slightly
Order of doffing PPE?
Gloves, goggles/face shield, gown, mask/respirator
Where to remove PPE?
At the doorway before leaving patient’s room
- Remove respirator outside of room with door closed
- Depends on the type of PPE worn and category of isolation patient is in
