What is the ureter?
A
a muscular tube which connects the kidney to the urinary bladder

How does the ureter relate to other organs/structures?
A
- retroperitoneal
- descends on the psoas major muscle
- crossed by the gonadal vessels
- crosses the common iliac artery at its bifurcation
- upper part lies in the abdomen
- lower part lies in the pelvis

What are the three constrictions of the ureter?
A
- ureteropelvic junction
- pelvic brim
- where it enters the wall of the bladder

What is clinically relevant about the constrictions of the ureter?
A
kidney stones can become lodged in them

What is the blood supply to the ureter?
A
Supplied by branches from:
- renal artery
- gonadal artery
- aorta
- common iliac artery
- superior vesical artery - supplies the pelvic portion of the ureter
