What is the rectum?
the part of the large intestine between the sigmoid colon and the anal canal
What is the rectosigmoid junction?
the upper limit of the rectum, located at the middle of the sacrum
What is the anorectal junction?
the lower limit of the rectum, located at the upper border of the pelvic diaphragm
What does the puborectalis form?
a sling (puborectal sling) around the rectum at the anorectal junction
What is the rectal ampulla?
dilated terminal portion of the rectum, immediately above the pelvic diaphragm
What are the transverse rectal folds?
- shelf-like projections
- there are three within the rectum
What are missing from the rectum?
- mesentery
- omental appendices
- haustra
What are the taeniae coli of the rectum like?
spread out to form a more complete outer layer
Describe the peritoneal covering of the rectum.
- upper third: peritoneum covers the front and sides
- middle third: peritoneum covers front
- lower third: no peritoneum covering
